Villagers evacuated in Marowijne District

-

Families who live in the Marowijne River and whose homes are currently flooded as a result of the persistent rains have been evacuated. The families were taken to various locations. The National Coordination Center for Disaster Control (NCCR) has already provided emergency aid. The Marowijne District Commissioner Freddy Daniel pointed out that the Cottica River has overflowed its banks and that nearly all of the villages that are located along this river are flooded. The village of Dantapu was hit the worst. DC Daniel who has already visited the villages to assess the situation pointed out that 35 villagers from Dantapu were moved to a house that was intended for the police. The villagers from Benatimofo were taken to a recreation center that is located on high ground. Some of the villagers from Akalekondre moved in with relatives while others are currently staying in a house that is still under construction and which is located at the corner of the Road to Moengo and the East West Connection and Patamakka. The house reportedly belongs to MP Ronnie Brunswijk. The villagers from Abadoekondre reportedly do not have access to potable water which is why the Surinamese Water Company (SWM) will lend a helping hand. At some sections of the East West Connection the water is flowing from one side of the road to the other side. The water is reportedly washing away the roadsides.
