New law aimed at restoring order at diplomatic posts
The government wants to introduce a new law which will deal with inefficiency at foreign posts. The Foreign Service Act will clearly describe the technocratic and political interpretation of diplomatic posts. Foreign Affairs (BUZA) Minister Yldiz Pollack-Beighle wants to present the bill before Parliament goes on recess. “This law is aimed at getting the right people at the right posts,” said the BUZA minister. BUZA officials have been formulating this legislation for many years now. They are currently studying laws from other countries in the region to know how they work in the country where they were made. Government officials and legislators all agree that the nation’s foreign policy has not been fully utilized. Last week legislators criticized BUZA officials for their poor performance in the trade agreement talks with Turkey.
Minister Pollack-Beighle, however, does not disagree with the critics. The issues will be addresses with the new law. “We will deploy people and sent them abroad with a mission. One must have a plan at each post so that one can know what one wants to achieve with that post because all posts must become profitable. Goals must be set so that one can see what the foreign policy is contributing to national development.” The new law is also aimed at protecting ambassadors and other diplomats who are recalled in an honorable manner so that their legal position is not downgraded.
