Second car-free day to be held at Latour

-

Stichting buurtorganisatie Latour (Stibula) will organize the nation’s second carfree day along the Latourweg on September 23. The foundation will organize a info day on Wednesday in its headquarters located at the Tigristraat number 7 in Latour. This event is being organized by Stichting buurthuis Latour, the scouts from the Pater Anton Donicie group, the Small Grants Programme and the Global Environmental Facility (UNDP).

Wilgo Koster, coördinator at Stibula, pointed out that the people from Latour are ecstatic about the upcoming event in their neighborhood. “The Latourweg is a very busy road but better motivated. There is even talk about an after party which would be a first for Latour”, said Koster who added that the event is being made possible by the new regional police chief who has assembled all of the social groups and the association of retailers from Latour. The foundation did not rule out the possibility of getting another residential neighborhood on board. The objective of Stibula is to organize as many social activities and projects as possible for the residents of Latour. The foundation helps to get things started so that the residents can take over from there. After two years Latour Project will commemorate its 60th anniversary. The carfree day can be regarded as a warm up party. Stibula will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. The nation’s first car-free day which was held on October 18, 2016 was organized by the Boy Scouts Suriname.

The objective of the event was to raise awareness about climate change and the environment. The scouts also wanted to promote a healthy lifestyle by encouraging cycling and walking. Several streets in the city were off limits to cars, buses and other vehicles on that day. The local shop owners reportedly objected to the event.
