China appreciates Suriname’s consistency in one-China policy
“The People’s Republic of China appreciates the fact that Suriname is sticking to the so called ‘one-China policy’,” said the Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, at a press conference which was held at Suriname’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (BUZA).
Qin came to Suriname to find new ways of further expanding relations between both countries.
Minister Qin pointed out that President Desi Bouterse and Suriname’s Foreign Affairs Minister Yldiz Pollack-Beighle have once again emphasized Suriname’s commitment. He also pointed out that his country which is currently the second biggest economy in the world, considers Suriname as one of the most important partners in the Caribbean Community (Caricom). About 20 Chinese trade companies are currently active in Suriname’s telecommunication, fisheries and agriculture sector. Several months ago the Confucius Institute which further promotes cultural exchange between Suriname and China was opened on the premises of Suriname’s Anton de Kom State (Adek) University.
The assistant minister applauded the 41-year old bilateral ties between both nations and held talks with the ministers of Trade and Industry, Finances, Education and Agriculture and Stockbreeding in order to further intensify these ties. He pointed out that his country made a huge contribution to Suriname’s infrastructure, healthcare sector, agriculture sector and the strengthening of Suriname’s capacity. China has offered more than 500 training programs and hundreds of students are currently attending classes at institutes in China. Qin hopes that the people who participated in the programs and scholarships will also contribute to the further economic development of Suriname. The People’s Republic of China is willing to expand these training programs and scholarships. Foreign Affairs Minister Pollack-Beighle pointed out that Suriname does not have an underdog position in the close friendly relation as the bilateral relation is based on equality and respect.
