Prosecutor under probe for tampering with high profile murder

-

A senior prosecutor is under investigation for alleged evidence tampering in an ongoing high profile murder case involving a wealthy businessman.

Ranks from the Guyana Police Force’s Major Crimes Unit learnt of the allegation two weeks ago and have since launched an investigation. The police officer in question has since been removed as a prosecutor from that case. However, he is still functioning as a prosecutor. Investigators probing the murder case involving the wealthy businessman had secured confession statements from some of the suspects. When two of these accused were called to testify, reports are that the prosecutor claimed that the Guyana Police Force had no evidence in the matter. Kaieteur News learnt that the prosecutor’s superiors summoned him when they were informed of this development. When questioned, he allegedly claimed that he presented whatever evidence the state had against the murder suspects. However, when checks were made at the court, it was revealed that the prosecutor’s statement was inaccurate. He was subsequently removed from the case and the matter is being investigated. Kaieteur News understands that in 2015, the same prosecutor was under suspicion of evidence tampering in a case in which four persons were arrested and charged following the discovery of a large cache of ammunition and an illegal firearm. Ranks had conducted a search on the building in the city and unearthed over 1,000 rounds of 7.62 x39 ammunition and ammunition of other calibers, as well as a firearm.

The case has since been thrown out of the court. That same year, the prosecutor was also suspected of tampering with evidence in a murder investigation involving a woman who was knifed to death by her partner. When the Guyana Police Force (GPF) learnt of this, he was transferred to another station where he is once more in the spotlight.
