A deadly traffic accident that took place along the Afobakaweg near Mast 35 in the Para District on Friday claimed 3 lives. Reports indicate that a mini bus and a car had a head on collision. The driver and a passenger of the car died at the scene while a second passenger died at the hospital. Five injured people were rushed to the hospital. A fourth person died in a separate traffic accident that took place in the Nickerie District when a tractor and a pickup truck collided. An eye witness told Times of Suriname that she was sitting in a mini bus and that the driver of another mini bus was behind them but wanted to overtake them. She suspects that the driver of the other mini bus had not seen the car that was approaching from the opposite direction. The driver of the mini bus in which she was sitting signaled the other mini bus driver not to overtake him and to drive slowly but he nevertheless tried to pass them. “It was a loud bang,” said the eye witness who added that it seemed as if both vehicles went up in the air as a result of the head-on collision. The mini bus then ended up on its side. After the traffic accident had taken place, the driver of the first mini bus and other vehicles pulled over to help the victims. There were reportedly two men and one woman in the mini bus and three men and a woman in the car. The man and the woman who were sitting in the front were already dead. The eye witness pointed out that the traffic accident could have been prevented if the driver of the mini bus had listened to the warnings of the driver of her bus. There are reportedly 56 road deaths nationwide. Traffic accidents have already claimed 10 lives in the Traffic Safety Month which started on August 15 and ends on September 15.
