One man killed in freak accident

-

A 27-year-old man died on Wednesday afternoon when a house that is located at the corner of the Cello and the Pianostraat and that was under construction collapsed. The victim and other people were busy pouring cement for the owner of the house. The house collapsed while he was reportedly talking on the phone to his wife. Sources told Times of Suriname that the men had constructed a sun roof on the second floor of the house. The man was on the first floor when the upper level caved in. The victim who got caught underneath the rubble died at the scene of the accident as a result of his injuries. The other men tried to pull him out but it was already too late. There were two cars parked on the first floor. The employer’s fatherin-law was busy inspecting one of the cars when he suddenly saw the ceiling caving in. He could not run to safety and got caught between both vehicles. “I thought that my time was up,” said the man who added that the cars had saved his life. The construction workers managed to safe the employer’s father-in-law who had sustained a few minor injuries. The employer reportedly has a construction permit. An investigation has been launched to determine why the terrace caved in. Sources told Times of Suriname that another group of workers had done most of the construction work and that the second group that works for another contractor was trying to finish the work.
