About 15,000 kilos of drugs found in and from Suriname
About 15,000 kilograms of drugs that originated from Suriname was found in 2017. The drugs which reportedly have a street value of about €900 million were found in various European countries and at the harbor in Suriname. Dutch officials recently came across a container from Suriname that contained 184 kilos of cocaine. Dutch officials arrested a 77-yearold man after the cocaine had been seized at the port in Rotterdam. Dutch officials have intercepted and seized drug shipments from Suriname at the Rotterdam port several times this year. In most cases the drugs had been hidden in containers. Dutch officials intercepted 473 kilos of cocaine. In August they intercepted about 800 kilograms of cocaine in total and in September they intercepted 373 kilograms of cocaine. The reports indicate that the Dutch officials seized 1,830 kilograms of cocaine at the port in Rotterdam. Spanish police officers reportedly intercepted about 4,000 kilograms of cocaine when they searched a ship. Reports indicate that 165 drug parcels had been put in a hidden compartment in the floor of the kitchen. Each parcel weighed 23 kilograms. Spanish investigators suspect that the drugs were brought onboard the ship during its visit to Suriname. About 730 kilograms of drugs were also intercepted at Guadeloupe in November. The drugs had been hidden in bags of rice that were loaded in a container. 330 kilograms of drugs that originated from Suriname were also intercepted in the Bahamas. Jamaican officials intercepted 26.7 kilograms of drugs that also originated from Suriname. The biggest drug bust took place when 4.2 tons of cocaine was intercepted near the coast of Suriname. The drugs had been hidden onboard a fishing boat from Saint Vincent. The Police Force Suriname (KPS) in October 2017 announced that it had intercepted a record 3,124 kilograms of drugs in 2017. Most of the drugs had been intercepted and seized at the harbor.
