MZWO on strike

-

The Medische Zending Werknemersorganisatie (MZWO) on Tuesday launched a sit-down campaign. The workers will be on strike from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. and will only provide aid in the most urgent cases. But this means that members of the community do not have access to medical care. The MZWO on December decided that it would opt for this type of strike. The decision was made at an urgent meeting.

Only patients who inflicted by Sharp objects such as machetes and other life threatening problems will be addressed. Women who go into labor and children with a serious problem will receive medical care. The ambulance will only pick up patients in case of an emergency.

The union issued the strike because its members still have not received their salaries and bonuses.

The MZWO pointed out that SRD 3.8 million is needed in total.

Roy Haverkamp, chairman of the MZWO, pointed out that in November the workers received their wages at the very last day of the month. Last year the workers received their money after Christmas. Management on Friday made it clear that the workers can expect the same this year.

The union issued the strike to speed up the payment process. The union chairman pointed out that the workers want to get paid before Christmas. Haverkamp also made it clear that the strike will last this entire week until the problem has been addressed. If the workers do not receive their wages this week, the union will reportedly intensify its campaign.
