SEH prepares for emergency aid rush

-

As always the people at the Emergency Room (ER) of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) expect many ‘visitors’ in the last week of the year and the first week of the new year. That is why they have started preparing so that they can help everybody as fast as possible.

During this busy period there will be 21 physicians and 25 nurses on duty at the ER. “There are also enough part-timers who are just a call away,” said Mireya Rodriguez, acting head at the SEH. There are 23 beds at the ER. 21 are for adults and 2 are for minors. There are also 3 medical treatment rooms. The ER receives many people who have been involved in a traffic accident but it also gets visits from people who have had a stroke or who have been injured with a sharp object. The ER usually gets about 110 patients per day but during the Christmas holidays there were more patients. On December 25, there were 170 patients at the ER and on December 26 there were 153.

Rodriquez pointed out that there are also people who could have just gone to their family doctor. The ER is therefore urging people who do not have a serious injury to please go to their family doctor so that the ER can focus its attention on the urgent cases.
