Police union presents ultimatum

-

The Surinamese Police Union on Monday made it clear that it is waiting for a response from acting Minister of Justice and Police Ferdinand Welzijn. The union reportedly wants to discuss its wish package. Sergio Gentle, treasurer of the union, told Times of Suriname that the union had sent a letter last year regarding the issue but that it has not received any response. The union therefore sent another letter on January 3. The union made it clear that it would wait 2 weeks for an answer.

Gentle did not disclose what action the union would take if the minister fails to respond. Gentle made it clear that the union members are entitled to free medical treatment, including a dental plan. He also made it clear that one union representative must be on the disciplinary ‘commission’ as part of a certain degree of checks and balances. The police union also wants to talk about insurance for police officers who sustain permanent injuries in the line of duty and who can no longer perform their duties.

The union also wants to discuss a uniform allowance increase for the detectives because the current one is outdated. Gentle pointed out that the salaries of police officers have not been discussed for the past 45 years. “When everything went well financially in the country nobody bothered to think about the police,” said Gentle who added that police officers must not be forced to become beggars. “We will aim to improve the working conditions of the police.” The union also wants to discuss housing of police officers who are given assignments but also at the various stations and departments.

Gentle pointed out that there must be equipment for the Central Control Room and that safety shoes must be part of the basic package for the police officers and the special units. There must also be bullet proof vests and teargas masks. “We have made it clear ever since we came into office that the stance of the union will depend on the stance of the employer.”
