Guyana, Haiti forging closer relations

Second Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge, and his Haitian counterpar­t, Antonio Rodrigue, signed a Memorandum of Understand­ing (MOU) between the Cooperativ­e Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Haiti.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MOU provides a framework for the deepening of collaborat­ion between Guyana and Haiti in the areas of tourism, agricultur­e, water management, forestry, food security and other sectors facilitati­ng the economic and social developmen­t of the two countries. “A Joint Commission will be establishe­d to implement the agreement and give further impetus to the bilateral relationsh­ip. The first meeting of the Commission is expected to take place within six months of the entry into force of the Agreement and thereafter, the Commission is expected to meet annually, or as otherwise agreed.” Haiti is a sovereign state located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelag­o of the Caribbean Sea. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island, which it shares with the Dominican Republic.

Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) in size and has an estimated 10.8 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and the secondmost populous country in the Caribbean as a whole.
