615 dogs and cats sterilized during 10th sterilization project
615 animals were sterilized during the tenth sterilization project of Stichting Dierenbescherming Suriname in association with Stichting Vrienden van de Dierenbescherming Suriname. Statistics indicate that 472 dogs and 143 cats were sterilized. Project Coordinator Farisha Imamdi pointed out that the 10th project was a success. Stichting Dierenbescherming Suriname launched the sterilization project on February 19 and concluded it on March 2.
Dierenbescherming Suriname received many calls from animal owners who wanted to have their dog and/ or cat sterilized. The waiting list was reportedly very long. Imamdi pointed out that more animals could have been helped but that some people did not show up at their appointment. “Every day there were more than 10 cancellations,” said Imamdi who added that the foundation aims at sterilizing the stray dogs and cats in Suriname. The foundation hired 6 veterinarians to perform the surgeries. Last year 626 dogs and cats were sterilized. “If everybody had showed up, this year’s number would have been higher than last year’s,” said Imamdi. 615 seems like a high number but in reality it is not because everyday pups are brought to the animal shelter. The animal shelter reportedly can’t accommodate this many animals. “The message is slowly getting through to the people but there are still many stray dogs on the streets” said Imamdi who added that the foundation wants to repeat the project due to the high demand. Imamdi thanked the team of vets, assistants and volunteers who executed the project during 2 weeks.
