Rusland: “Parliament prefers trivial issues”

-

MP Gregory Rusland (NPS) recently pointed out that it seems as if parliament is giving preference to discussing trivial issues after the budget discussion. “The government has not given answers or complete answers regarding issues such as crime, bad healthcare and corruption,” said MP Rusland who added that parliament and the government are going to spend their time discussing an unimportant bill.

The legislator pointed out that parliament is scheduled to resume the May 30, 2018 discussion of the bill regarding the approval for the agreement for economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation between the Republic of Suriname and the government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. “This bill has been on the agenda for a long time and was discussed for the last time on May 30, 2017. Why should we have to focus on it after one year? Right now it is not important for Suriname to focus on its ties with other nations while the people are dealing with many problems and are waiting for solutions from the government and parliament,” said MP Rusland. MP Rusland who is also a member of the committee of rapporteurs of the bill regarding the collaboration with Equatorial Guinea pointed out that the opposition has no say when it comes to determining the agenda. The government and the chairwoman of parliament are reportedly in charge of that. “You can clearly see that this administration keeps avoiding important issues. Formally recording a joint venture with a foreign nation is of little importance right now. The people want to know what will be done to structurally address the many problems in the country.”
