Opposition not interested in rally
None of the opposition parties are reportedly interested in supporting the rally that is being organized by the Next Generation Movement. The leaders of the various opposition parties did point out, however, that they members are free to support the rally but that they will not urge anybody to join the peaceful protest which is scheduled to start around 2 p.m. on March 22. The leaders of the opposition parties also pointed out that each campaign against the government’s bad policy will be supported. Xaviera Jessurun, one of the members of the organization, expects a huge turnout especially given the fact that many people are discontent with the government’s policy. “So far the labor union federations C-47, BvL/ALS and the political organization Strei! And the activists from ‘We zijn Moe’ have expressed their support. On the day in question we will see if more unions and organizations will show up,” said Jessurun. Chandrikapersad Santhoki, chairman of the Progressive Reform Party (VHP), pointed out that his party is in the field everyday to mobilize people against the government’s mismanagement. “We are making voters aware of the fact that they are entitled to a better life and that this government is not capable of getting the country out of the crisis”, said Santhoki who added that the government should have done everything it could to get the economy under control and to tackle poverty. “Corruption must be tackled firmly.”
