Pedestrian is 3rd road death in Nickerie

-

A 37-year-old man died after he had been hit by a car along the Ingenieur Attaoelahweg in the Nickerie District. Chief Inspector Mohammed Ashruf, the regional police chief of Nickerie, told Times of Suriname that the accident took place around 10:30 on Tuesday night.

The pedestrian was walking on the road when he was hit by a car. The driver reportedly fled the scene and is still at large. Two people who had heard a loud bang rushed to the scene to offer help but they saw a lifeless body lying on the street. They notified the police and signaled all the drivers that there was somebody on the road because they did not want other cars to drive over the victim. When a policeman drove by, he saw the two people signaling him and thought that they needed help so he stepped on the brakes. He reportedly drove past the victim. Initial reported indicate that the victim had been hit twice by separate cars. Ashruf made it clear that the police car did not drive over the victim. Investigators confiscated the policeman’s driver’s license pending the investigation. The victim’s body was reportedly taken to the Coroner’s Office for an autopsy. Reports indicate that there are hardly any street lights at the location where the deadly accident took place. The pedestrian is the 3rd road death in Nickerie this year.
