Two armed robberies in supermarkets
Police reports indicate that robbers targeted 2 supermarkets in separately. One armed robbery took place in the Wanica District on Wednesday morning while another took place in Paramaribo on Tuesday night. The storekeeper who runs a supermarket in the Wanica District was alone in the supermarket and standing behind the cash register when two men entered and asked for a big bag of rice. Rice was reportedly out of stock. One of the men went outside and returned with a sawed-off hunting rifle while his accomplice pulled out a machete. The robber who was armed with the hunting rifle pointed it at the storekeeper and instructed him to stay quiet. The robbers then tied up the victim with clothes that they had brought along. They then cut the wires of the security cameras before making off with 2 mobile phones, money and prepaid phone cards. One of the robbers had reportedly assaulted the victim by hitting him on his back with the flat side of the machete.
Police reports also indicate that 4 masked robbers entered a supermarket located along the Martin Luther Kingweg in Paramaribo shortly before closing time on Tuesday night. They overpowered the storekeeper and an employee after they had entered the building through the backdoor which had not been locked. They reportedly tied up the victims before fleeing the scene with money, jewels, the security camera system and several bottles of alcohol. The robbers who got away with SRD 60,000 and $2,000 had hit their victims in their faces. Two of the robbers were armed with guns while another one was armed with a machete. The fourth robber was armed with a wooden beam. The perpetrators left the building through the backdoor and fled in a gray get-away vehicle. The perpetrators are still at large.
