LVV temporarily puts fishing permit reTuests on iFe

-

The Ministry of Agriculture, Stockbreeding and Fisheries (LVV) will not issue any new fishing permits until further notice. This means that it will temporarily put new requests for fishing permits on ice. Fisheries Minister Lekram Soerdjan announced the ministry’s decision in Parliament on Thursday. He explained that the government is working hard to regulate the fisheries sector. Minister Soerdjan pointed out that the permit policy will become part of the strict policy at the ministry. He explained that it would not be necessary to revoke all permits because fishing permits are only valid for one year. Applicants who want to request an extension must comply with all of the conditions of the permit or else the request is not granted. The minis- ter also explained that the government can’t suddenly revoke all of the fishing permits. The ministry is currently busy screening all of the permits that have been issued. It is also holding talks about the introduction of the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS). Minister Soerdjan added that a contract will be inked with a company that will carry out the VMS project as soon as the talks have been concluded. The Vessel Monitoring System will enable organizations that keep an eye on the fisheries sector to keep track of the fishing boats. The Ministry of Agriculture, Stockbreeding and Fisheries will also collaborate with the Ministry of Justice and Police and the Ministry of Defense in order to control the fisheries sector more effectively on land and at sea.
