Fishermen’s Association believes in ‘miracle’

-

Willem Mohamed-Hoessein, chairman of the Fishermen’s Association in Suriname, recently pointed out that the association still believes in a miracle and that all the missing fishermen will be found. Mohamed-Hoessein pointed out that the association will not give up hope and that several families had lost hope of finding their loved ones since team began with their search efforts. “After several fishermen turned up alive and well, everybody suddenly believed that the other missing fishermen would also be found alive. That is the main reason why we haven’t given up hope,” said the chairman who added that he has spotted the Coast Guard and other units on the water and in the air. “The government had promised us to be more visible at sea and it has kept its promise. The fishermen were afraid of going to sea because of the pirate attacks. I am glad that the surveillance has been intensified and that the fishermen can return to sea to earn their bread and butter,” said Mohamed-Hoessein who added that most of the fishing boats have already left the harbor. The boats that are still at the harbor could leave at any time.

Mark Lall, secretary at the Fishermen’s Association, confirmed that the body that washed up at the Number 63 Beach, Corentyne, Berbice on Friday is that of one of the missing fishermen. He explained that the family contacted the association to confirm that their relative has been located.

Jerry Slijngaard, coordinator at the National Coordination Center for Disaster Control, pointed out that no bodies or fishermen were found during the weekend and that search teams are still looking for the other missing fishermen.
