BUZA and Chinese ambassador ink OBOR initiative
Suriname’s Foreign Affairs (BUZA) Minister Yldiz Pollack-Beighle and China’s ambassador to Suriname, Zhang Jinxiong, on May 25 inked the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), regarding ‘the Framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative’, which is also known as the One Belt One Road (OBOR)-Initiative. Ambassador Zhang Jinxiong emphasized the good collaboration that already exists on various areas between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Suriname. Minister PollackBeighle underlined the special initiative from China that is aimed at improving relations. She referred to Dalian 4, the housing project and the construction of the Wanica Hospital. The initiative of Chinese President Xi JinPing is a development strategy aimed at connectivity and collaboration between various nations in the world. Proposed in 2013, the initiative aims to build trade and infrastructure networks connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient Silk Road routes. It comprises the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. One important benefit of the ancient Silk Road is that it brought various cultures together. It also encouraged the development of world trade. More than 70 countries have joined the ambitious infrastructural project. By signing the MOU regarding ‘the Framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative, Suriname has clearly chosen to partake in this development.
