:ilgo 9alies, chairman of the Teachers¶ Association BvL and the Alliance of Teachers in Suriname ALS , on Thursday pointed out that Education, Science and Culture 0inister Lilian Ferrier gave an Anansi story on Thursday. The minis ter on Thursday held a press conference to elaborate on the transfer of the Advanced Teachers¶ Training ,nstitute ,2L to the Anton de .om Adek State University. “The dictatorial attitude in Suriname must stop because it does not bring progress. :e will not stand for it and that is why the ,2L teachers are on strike,” said 9alies on Thursday before adding that the ,2L teachers want to make it clear to the minister that “she can¶t have whatever she wants.” 9alies is puzzled by the fact that the minister on Thursday announced that the transfer will go on as plan ned in the coming school year despite all the objections from several corners within the edu cation sector. “Ferrier has tal ked to teachers at the ,2L who explained to her that her plans will be impractical. The uni versity board also explained to the minister that the university currently is not able to µadopt¶ the ,2L. :hy is she holding deliberations, if she has al ready made up her mind"” “So how is it possible for the minister, her advisors and va rious committees to decide that the plans will be pushed through"” The minister on -une informed the ,2L that no new students would be en rolled in the new school year as the ,2L would become part of the state university. 9alies explained that only .2 of the teachers at the ,2L will keep their jobs and teach at Adek. Reports indicate that not all of the teachers at the ,2L have a bachelor degree. 9alies also explained that the transformation should not be done hastily and that the mi nister must first consider the fate of the teachers.
