REfiNERY BEING DISMANTLED ACCORDING TO INTERNATIO­NAL STANDARDS

Alcoa recently announced that the plans for the dis mantling of the refinery of the Suriname Aluminum &ompany (Suralco) have been thoroughly and meti culously developed accor ding to the right safety and environmen­t standards. 7he multinatio­nal pointed out that the dismantlin­g of the refinery has been judged and approved by the Surinamese government. “All of the planned activities will be carried out according to in ternationa­l standards with the focus on safety and the environmen­t. 1 Alcoa decided to gradually reduce produc tion at the Suralco refinery. Aluminum industry analysts say that declining aluminum production in North and South America, the refine ry’s natural markets, are ano ther reason why keeping the refinery running was no lon ger feasible. 7he results and conclusion­s were discussed with the Surinamese govern ment before production was halted completely. ,n 1 Alcoa reached an agreement with the Surinamese gover nment via the Presidenti­al &ommission for the Bauxite ,ndustry. Both parties agreed to permanentl­y close down and dismantle the Suralco refinery.
