Fire leaves mother and four children homeless

A woman and her four children on Monday became homeless after a fire consumed their home located along the Para Street. Inspector Lloyd Tolud told Times of Suriname that the police received the call about the fire around 12.25. A police unit rushed to the scene and confirmed that a house was ablaze.

Shortly afterwards firefighte­rs also arrived on the scene. However, the flames destroyed the entire house. Tolud pointed out that EK and her four children lived in the house. There was reportedly nobody home when the fire broke out. Bystanders claimed that they heard a bang in the vicinity of the kitchen. Shortly after that they spotted flames and smoke. Fire Department spokesman Harvey Laing told Times of Suriname that the Fire Department Suriname (KBS) received the call about the housefire around 12.31. Firefighte­rs left the station within 2 minutes and it took them less than 6 minutes to reach their destinatio­n. Laing pointed out that the entire house was built from wood. The house had fire insurance and was also connected to the powergrid. Firefighte­rs had the fire under control around 12.47. The woman who owned the house was at work at the time of the fire. Bystanders notified the fire department when they spotted flames and smoke. The police had also notified the fire department. Firefighte­rs reportedly managed to remove a gas cylinder of 20 lbs from the house.
