Indictment for Radj Oedit expires after objection

-

The indictment for Radj Oedit, who is wanted for questioning in connection to the 488 kilos of drugs case, expired on Monday after Oedit’s defense Attorney, Irvin Kanhai, had lodged a notice of objection. Oedit had initially been summoned to appear before Judge Siegline Wijnhard on Monday. Kanhai told Times of Suriname that there was no case against Oedit on Monday. He pointed out that the objection has not yet been processed.

Harti L and Dionathan M, the suspects who were arrested after 488 kilos of drugs were seized by the police, on Monday appeared in court. They are being accused of having smuggled 488 kilograms of cocaine into the country and they are also being accused of partaking in a crime organization. Prosecutor Shanta Mahadew reportedly asked the court to postpone the trial until November 5.

Defense Attorneys Kanhai and Michella LauKerssenberg responded by asking the court to release their clients from police custody. Kanhai pointed out that the Public Prosecutor’s Office still has not asked for any witnesses. He also pointed out that the pilots of the drug plane had been forced to enter a certain airspace. The police shot at the plane thereby forcing the pilots to land on an airstrip located in the Saramacca District. Kanhai also pointed out that the suspects had decided to turn back. Prosecutor Mahadew pointed out that the suspects had confessed to bringing drugs to Suriname. “The men had stated that they had previously landed on the airstrip in Saramacca. They brought a second load but things did not go as planned. The suspects were never in the airspace of neighboring Guyana as is being claimed by Kanhai”, said the prosecutor. Kanhai had told the examining judge that the suspects previously had not visited Suriname and that this was their first visit. One of the men spoke of Tibiti while the other one spoke of Tahiti. Judge Siegline Wijnhard rejected the request for the release of the suspects as there are serious objections against their release.
