Minister Noersalim receives Surinamese-Javanese bible

-

Home Affairs Minister Mike Noersalim and other government officials recently received a copy of the nation’s first SurinameseJavanese bible. The consecration of this bible will reportedly take place at the Indra Maju Sports and Cultural Center on August 19.

“The presentation of the SurinameseJavanese Bible can be considered a milestone for the Surinaams Bijbel Genootschap (SBG),” said the ministry in a press release. Minister Noersalim is proud that the SurinameseJavanese bible has been made available to all as the nation celebrates the 128th anniversary of Javanese immigration. It will prove useful to SurinameseJavanese youths who need to brush up on their linguistic skills and the entire Surinamese community that wants to learn SurinameseJavanese. The Ministry of Home Affairs deems the preservation of language important and supported the translation of the bible texts to SurinameseJavanese from the start. “I congratulate you with this important linguistic acquisition as minister of Home Affairs but also on behalf of the government of the Republic of Suriname,” Minister Noersalim told the audience. It is estimated that about 90,000 people speak SurinameseJavanese and that 60,000 of these people reside in Suriname while the rest resides in the Netherlands. Javanese is one of about 20 languages that are spoken in Suriname.
