Six road deaths in TSM and counting…

-

Two more road deaths were registered in the Traffic Safety Month on Tuesday night. One person died in the Saramacca District while the other died in the Paramaribo District.

28yearold driver JA who did not have a driver’s license died along the Misgunstweg in Saramacca around 23:20 on Tuesday night. He was driving his car which suddenly veered off the road at a simple curve in the road. The car reportedly flipped over before ramming a utility pole and breaking in two. Witnesses claim that two passengers crawled out of the car before fleeing on foot. JA died at the scene of the accident. Two empty bottles of whisky and one full bottle of whisky were found in the car that was severely damaged.

It is believed that the driver was speeding and that he lost control over the vehicle. The driver’s body has already been released by the authorities. The police are currently trying to track down the two passengers who fled the scene. A resident told Times of Suriname that JA and other boys started drinking alcohol at a local store on Tuesday. JA bought a bottle of whisky around 10 p.m. before buying another one around 11:15 p.m. When several people told JA to stop drinking alcohol, he started cussing. The resident eventually saw JA stumbling before getting into his car and driving off with a few passengers. Shortly afterwards the man heard that JA had been in a traffic accident. The deadly traffic accident happened at a distance of about two hundred meters from the store where JA had been drinking what turned out to be his last bottles of whisky. The resident claims that the passengers are boys from Grankreek. He complained that if the store had closed at 10 pm, the driver would not have been able to buy any more alcohol. He therefore wants the authorities to take firm action against stores who stay open after 10 pm in order to sell alcohol. 30yearold RM died in a hitandrun that took place in Paramaribo on Wednesday morning. It is believed that RM wanted to get into his car which was parked on the roadside. RM was rushed to the Emergency Room around 4 pm but died at the hospital around 8:20 pm. The deaths of these two men have brought the number of road deaths in the Traffic Safety Month (TSM) to 6. The Traffic Safety Month started on August 15 and ends on September 15. The number of road deaths in 2018 jumped from 46 to 48. UTSA professors Amar Balla and Ruyan Guo hold up the certificate signifying the robot’s spot in the record books.
