Government puts dismantling of Paranam refinery on hold
The dismantling of the aluminum refinery at Paranam has been put on hold in response to discussions between the government and the executives of the Alcoa bauxite company. Acting President Ashwin Adhin on Friday sent a letter to parliament, indicating that Alcoa is waiting for a signal from parliament regarding the dismantling issue. Adhin added that permission for dismantling will be given after new legislation has been approved by parliament. The chairwoman of parliament, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, is pleased with the government’s announcement and pointed out that the government has made sure that no precedents are created. “I am happy to announce that the acting president on August 31 informed parliament that the government has decided to put the dismantling of the Alcoa plant on hold in response to the discussions and the comments made in parliament.” The chairwoman explained that to her the government’s letter means that the Alcoa issue must first be discussed in parliament. Members from both the opposition and the coalition have recommended to the government that it should change its mind about dismantling the refinery. Acting President Ashwin Adhin pointed out that the government has taken notice. Although the dismantling process has been put on hold, it must take place sooner or later due to the huge security risk.”
