7 road deaths in TSM
Statistics indicate that traffic accidents have already claimed 7 lives in the Traffic Safety Month (TSM). Helmut Gezius, chairman of the Suriname Traffic Volunteers’ Force (KSV), told Times of Suriname that he had expected citizens to drive more cautiously during this month. He had also expected more police action. Unfortunately he counted 7 road deaths on Tuesday. In two cases the drivers drove a vehicle without a driver’s license. Gezius believes that these drivers assumed that there was a very small chance that they would get caught. The same goes for people who get behind the wheel while they are under the influence of alcohol. Gezius pointed out that the police must beef up its surveillance. “Many people still do not realize that getting behind the wheel while intoxicated affects their driving skills,” said Gezius who pointed out that young man who drove without a driver’s license and who caused a deadly traffic accident along the Anton Dragtenweg had driven a car multiple times. That traffic accident claimed the life of another driver. Gezius explained that that young man’s parents had a responsibility. “The call for heavier punishments is getting stronger,” said Gezius who added that people who cause traffic accidents must be held accountable for the suffering they cause to others. “It is sad that a moped rider died after a bus driver failed to give right of way.” The Traffic Safety Month started on August 15 and ends on September 15.
