More than 130 vehicles flipped over this year

-

Statistics which the Traffic Volunteers’ Force Suriname (KSV) received from the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) indicate that 135 vehicles have already flipped over this year. Helmut Gezius, chairman of the KSV, told Times of Suriname that the highest number of vehicles namely 36 flipped over in August. He thinks that it could be because of the sphere the people were in. Many people go out in the summer vacation. “The people need recreation and drive on certain roads to reach the recreational resorts. People also hit the streets to go shopping. In January 14 vehicles flipped over. 14 in February, 21 in March, 14 in April, 2 in May, 21 in June and 13 in July. This year most of the traffic accidents took place on the Indira Gandhiweg namely 65. 54 traffic accidents happened along the Martin Luther Kingweg and 53 along the Kwattaweg.

The Coesewijne- and the Mr Jagernath Lachmonstraat and the Indira Ghandiweg each had 32 traffic accidents. Gezius pointed out that the police can use the statistics for traffic surveillance. He also pointed out that organizations and companies could also raise traffic safety awareness on these streets.

Gezius believes

that

it would be better to also raise awareness at the vacation resorts regarding the link between alcohol consumption and reckless driving. “A car does not just flip over. The driver was either driving recklessly or he or she was speeding. The drivers whose cars flip over due to reckless driving or speeding do not belong in traffic.”
