Police to execute 10,000 traffic verdicts

-

The police officers from the Western region recently launched a campaign aimed at executing 10,000 traffic verdicts. Police Inspector Ulrich Tjin Liep Shie told Times of Suriname that about 10,000 traffic violators who were found guilty in traffic court will be summoned or tracked down to pay their fine. If the convicted person can’t pay the fine, he or she will have to spend some time in prison. A SRD 75 fine is equal to 3 days of imprisonment while a fine of SRD 1,750 equals 6 weeks jail time.

The police will be busy summoning or tracking down the convicted until the end of this year.

Tjin Liep Shie pointed out that 500 people have already been summoned since September 1. The police think that they can deposit between SRD 1 and 2 million in the special bank account of the attorney general at the end of this campaign. Defendants were reportedly found guilty of various violations such as exceeding the speed limit, driving without a driver’s license or driving a vehicle that has no insurance or that was not inspected. Most of the traffic tickets were handed out along the Oost-Westverbinding, Van Idsinga- en Graanoogstrijstweg, Soekramsinghstraat, Fredericiweg, RP Bharosstraat, Ir MN Attaoelahweg, Walter Hewitt- and GG Maynardstraat, Parmessarweg, Oost-Kanaal- and the Margarethenburgstraat.
