Rusland says shooting incident Grun Djari raises questions
The chairman of the National Party Suriname (NPS), Gregory Rusland, pointed out that the shot that was fired at the headquarters of the NPS, Grun Djari, raises questions. R e p o r t s indicate that there is a bullet hole in the wall of the headquarters of the NPS. A soldier claims that a shot was accidentally fired when he handed over the weapon to a colleague. Rusland who is also a legislator pointed out that many questions remain unanswered. “How could the gun go off unaccidentally? Why are soldiers guarding a restaurant located in the vicinity of Grun Djari? Why was the weapon handed over at the door of Grun Djari?” Rusland added that administrators of the party’s Paramarbo division were in a meeting on Tuesday around 19:30 when the members suddenly heard a shot. The bullet reportedly went straight through the window pane near the spote where the members were in a meeting. “So it happened really close. We immediately contacted the police. The Military Police also showed up to investigate the incident. We the received a visit from the commander of the Military Police who was on duty. The person who had fired the shot was quickly identified. The soldier was brought to Grun Djari where he was questioned by the MP. The commander of the MP apologized for the fact that a soldier was involved. “We still have to wait for the final results of the investigation. We were told that a special committee would be tasked with investigating the incident,” said Rusland who added that there are certain prodcedures that must be followed when handing over a weapon. “Several questions must be answered. Fortunately nobody was hurt.”
