Suriname celebrates 165th anniversar­y of Chinese immigratio­n

A series of activities aimed at celebratin­g the 165th anniversar­y of Chinese immigratio­n started at the Street Food Fair that was held at the Soeng Ngie Oriental Market on Sunday morning. Various local cultural groups entertaine­d the audience with their songs and dance skills.

Chinese artists who traveled all the way to Suriname for this joyful occasion also took the stage.

Of course the various cullinary delicacies were also available.

At the start of the Street Food Fair the People’s Republic of China’s ambassador to Suriname, Liu Quan, expressed his joy at being present at the event. He pointed out that the Surinamese kitchen is a reflection of the various ethnic groups in the country. The people are also fond of the Chinese kitchen which is also part of Suriname.

The diplomat pointed out that the embassy actively participat­ed in the Street Food Fair that was organized by the Suriname China United Associatio­n (SCUA). The members of the staff and the ambassador prepared several typical Chinese snacks such as cold noodles and fried dough twist. The proceeds will reportedly be donated. Ambassador Liu praised the efforts of the SCUA to celebrate the 165th anniversar­y of Chinese immigratio­n in a special manner. The next activity will be held in De Witte Lotus on October 18. On October 19 the umbrella organizati­on that represents 14 Chinese associatio­ns will place wreaths at the Friendship park located along the Jagernath Lachmonstr­aat and in Nieuw-Amsterdam. A photograph­y exhibition will also be held in Kong Ngie Tong Sang from October 19 until October 21. On October 20, Chinese Immigratio­n Day, several activities will be held at the Indepence Square.
