KBS gains ground at Ornamibo
The Fire Department Suriname (KBS) on Sunday indicated that the fire at the Ornamibo Garbage Dump was slightly under control. Fire Department Spokesman Ulrich Coats who assessed the situation at Ornamibo on Sunday emphasized the fact that the situation will not get worse. Coats explained that the situation is under control but that the smell and the fire are still in the air. He pointed out that the firefighters had gained some ground with their efforts. Coats also explained that everything is happening with the support of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communication. The Public Works Ministry has reportedly deployed its machinery. “We hope to keep gaining more ground. We remain positive”, said Coats who added that the KBS is dependent on several factors such as the water level in the Para River. If the water level is low, the Fire Department can’t use the submersible pump. The pump reportedly broke down on Sunday morning. The firefighters reportedly need several breaks to rest and regain their strength.
Coats explained that the firefighters have to carry a water hose across big piles of garbage. Despite the many obstacles at Ornamibo, the firefighters are motivated to get the job done. Coats also pointed out that the firefighters have to work in the middle of all the toxic smoke and other things that are hazardous to one’s health. “We are here to serve the community. We are asking for patience.”
