Newmont deems NWO’s statements regrettable
Newmont Suriname reportedly issued a press release, indicating that it deemed the statements that were made recently by the Newmont Workers’ Organization (NWO) regrettable.
The NOW reportedly made certain statements regarding job security of local workers. “The Newmont Workers’ Organization recently made a few very blunt remarks and worrisome statements regarding the job security of our workers. During the past couple of months Newmont Suriname developed a constructive and meaningful relation with the NWO based on regular consultations”, said Newmont Suriname in its press release. The company added that the statements are not a realistic portrayal of the actual situation. “There are no reasons to doubt the continuation of job security,” said Albert Ramdin, executive at Newmont Suriname. Reports indicate that about 1,300 people work at Newmont which commercially produces gold at Merian in the Sipaliwini District. The commercial production of gold takes place in accordance with Suriname’s labor legislation. About 95 percent of Newmont’s workforce consists of Surinamese workers. About 280 workers are from the local Paramaccan community. Newmont Suriname is very pleased with the contribution of these Surinamese workers to the company’s operations.
“Newmont Suriname will continue to make a contribution to the development of the people and the growth of the Surinamese economy. The company remains committed to building a positive and constructive relation with all parties concerned even with the Newmont Workers’ Organization”, said Albert Ramdin. “But we also expect everybody to keep developing these necessary relations in a responsible and proper manner.”
