Fire consumes three homes
Three homes burnt down on Saturday. Two of the homes were located next to each along the Snijbonenstraat in Paramaribo while the third house was located along the Wayamboweg in Saramacca. Fire Department spokesman Anthony Grootfaam told Times of Suriname that the dispatcher call center received the call about the fire along the Snijbonenstraat around 11:27. When the firefighters arrived at the location, they saw that two of the eight wooden houses that were located on the premises were on fire. The firefighters removed two 28 lbs gas cylinders out of a burning house. The fire was reportedly under control around 11:48. The houses had not been insured against fire but they were connected to the power grid. It is suspected that somebody deliberately started the fire. Sources told Times of Suriname that a suspect has been arrested on an arson charge.
Grootfaam pointed out that the fire station at Jarikaba received a call about a house fire along the Wayamboweg around 14:59. The fire engine left the station around 15:01 and arrived at the location at 15:10. The house had already been destroyed by the fire when the fire engine arrived at the location. The owner of the house was not home when the fire broke out. The fire had been spotted by bystanders. There were no gas cylinders in the house. The cause of the fire is not known.
