AZP renovations on schedule

-

The renovations that are taking place at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) will be finsihed within a year. The third and fourth floor of the main building will be reopened this month. There are reportedly funds available for the improvement of other services such as the operation room. The OR will be upgraded to meet high quality standards.

The director at the nation’s biggest hospital, Claudia Marica-Redan, pointed out that the Military Hospital which is currently at the disposal of the AZP is full because “we eventually had to accommodate our people at another location.”

Another project of the AZP is the Suriname Eye Center. “The expansions are going smoothly,” said MaricaRedan. All eyes are on the new OR which is currently outdated and overcrowded. Specialists must stick to a tight schedule in order to perform their surgeries.

The new OR has 6 modern units. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will also be expanded. “Those projects are on the waiting list and we already have the necessary funds for them.” The AZP does not have enough beds for all the patients and has therefore opted to screen the patients and set priorities. “People who we can’t admit are referred to other hospitals. This means that they do not need to worry. The people who are put on the waiting list for several hours or a day or contacted by the hospital. The AZP reportedly admits 40 to 50 people on a daily basis. After the renovations have been completed, the situation will be completely different.
