Ten road deaths and counting…….

-

A traffic accident that took place on the Afobakaweg on Friday claimed the life of a driver who had the Dutch nationality. The driver whose car reportedly collided with a double cabin pickup truck died at the scene of the accident. The victim’s mother told Times of Suriname that her son, UP, was on vacation in Suriname and that he would return to his wife and children on Valentine’s Day, February 14. The man who was busy with the construction of his house along the Afobakaweg had driven to a location to fetch water from a creek. The water would be used to construct the base of his house. UP alias Boekoe was 80 meters from the creek when he wanted to turn his vehicle. Neither he nor the driver of the pickup who had most likely been speeding saw each other on time. They both decided to head for the roadside to avoid a collision but ended up colliding with each other. Both vehicles flipped over several times before ending up in the bushes near the creek. UP was thrown out of vehicle and ended up next to the other vehicle. Several drivers who had witnessed the accident rushed to their aid. When they attended to UP, they realized that he was no longer alive so they pulled the other driver and a passenger out of the pickup before calling the police. The driver of the pickup and his passenger sustained minor injuries. The mother of UP pointed out that people drive at high speeds on the Afobakaweg without taking their own safety and the safety of other people into account. Boekoe is officially the nation’s tenth road death in 2019.
