Female UG bomb threat student for court Monday

University of Guyana student, Diane Jaffarally, who was arrested on suspicion of sending bomb threats to the University of Guyana is due to appear in court Monday on charges related to the threats.

Police allege that her phone was used to make the threatening calls. She is said to be an employee at a prominent city advertising company. Her attorney-at-law is Latchmie Rahamat and denied claims that Jaffarally made any of the phone calls. Her family members, however, claim that the phone was hacked.

The Crime Chief and a team of officers on Wednesday last, met with the university’s Vice Chancellor, Ivelaw Griffith, as well as other senior functionaries including Public Relations Officer, Ms Paulette Paul, where the prevailing situation was assessed. The family had released a statement, which reads :“We wish to categorically deny the allegation leveled against her and will strive to undertake every possible means to ensure that her name is cleared of these claims”.

Her family believes that she is being used as a scapegoat, and that the leaking of her name is indicative of an ulterior motive. The incident, which caused UG to shut down for a short time, also resulted in the institution ramping up security. The threat followed others made against the School of the Nations, Queens College and The Bishops’ High School.
