Xaviera Jessurun presents petition to parliament

Xaviera Jessurun on Thursday presented a petition to parliament on behalf of The Next Generation Suriname and the people of Suriname. The petition which was presented in response to the departure of Glenn Gersie as governor of the Central Bank of Suriname was received by MP Patricia Etnel (NPS).

Jessurun pointed out that presenting the petition would not be the end of it and that the organizati­on would determine its next step.

Jessurun criticized the government for failing to listening to legislator­s who wanted to discuss the recent developmen­t in parliament on February 14. The opposition parties on Wednesday asked the government appear in parliament on Thursday to shed some light on recent events. Jessurun explained that the “government does not want to give an explanatio­n as to why Gersie was given the boot.”

MP Etnel will make sure that the chairwoman of parliament gets the petition. The legislator from the opposition pointed out that the opposition had planned to hold an emergency meeting but that it was cancelled. “Issues that are extremely important at the moment such as the Gersie issue must be discussed because lies were told,” said MP Etnel.n who added that the things that are discussed in the house of the people must be made public. Jessurun made it clear that “I want answers from the government.”
