Brothers file lawsuit against AG and State

-

The two brothers Mario R and Mao R who are suspected of murder and participation in a criminal organization have been extradited by the Surinamese justice department to their Dutch colleagues have filed a lawsuit against the attorney general and the state of Suriname through their lawyers, Irvin Kanhai and Arjan Ramlakhan, and Attorney General Roy Bajnath Panday. Ramlakhan told Times of Suriname that they have asked the court to make all the official files available to the defense. The defense attorneys want to know on what grounds the brothers were deported from the country and who has issued the extradition order. Furthermore, the status of the criminal case in which Mao R informed his lawyer Kanhai that the hashish that was confiscated by the police belonged to him. The defense wants to know the grounds on which the hashish was seized and what will happen with it. She had asked the AG for all procedural documents, but has received no response. That is why a lawsuit was filed. The brothers were reportedly arrested on the grounds of the Illegal Immigration Act. When the defense attorney went to visit one of the brothers, he was not in the detention center. The police told the attorney that the man was on the street to give detailed descriptions to investigators. It turned out that he was actually being taken to the airport to be deported. The second brother has also been deported. Ramlakhan says that the law clearly states that suspects are entitled to have their case handled by a defense attorney pending the extradition request. The defense team also claimed that their clients were the victims of aggravated assault and that officials have broken several laws. The defense attorneys are demanding to receive all copies of the files within 1x24 hours. Ramlakhan asked for this to be coupled with a penalty of ten thousand Surinamese dollars for every hour that the attorney general fails to comply and one hundred thousand SRDs for each day that the State fails to comply.
