President Bouterse gives starting signal for Kabalebo Asphalt Road Project

-

President Desi Bouterse on Monday gave the starting signal for the asphalt road project at Kabalebo. The objective of the project is to give the 8 kilometer long road that connects the Amerindian villages of Apoera, Section and Washabo an asphalt layer within less than 12 months. The president pointed out that Apoera has made huge progress. “You clearly see the difference when you visit Apoera nowadays,” said the head of state who also asked for one minute of silence in remembrance of the pioneers of the West who are no longer alive to see this day. “There are still locations where development has not started yet,” said President Bouterse who then urged the people of the three villages to seize the opportunity that is being given to them. “It is of the utmost importance for all of you to work together and to show initiative.” Public Works, Transport and Communication Minister Vidjai Chotkan urged the villagers to stick to the speed limit after the road has been given an asphalt layer. “We are constructing a road not a race track. It is intended for progress and not for accidents,” said Minister Chotkan. “This administration works hard for everybody. We are bringing progress to you,” said the minister. The village chief of Apoera, Carlo Lewis, applauded the project and thanked the government for “this great development.” “We have patience and we believe in this government. With its various projects, this government has proven that it cares about the hinterland.” District Commissioner Joanna Aroepa pointed out that “history is being made.” “Villagers even threatened to put up road blocks but patience conquers everything. I congratulate all of you with this success.”
