Governor Van Trikt on leave Investigation launched
The governor of the Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS), Robert-Gray van Trikt, is on leave. Meanwhile an investigation has been launched into the actions of the governor. Sources remain tightlipped when asked what is going on. The activities are deemed serious because an investigation has been launched.
Van Trikt is cooperating with the investigation and has therefore gone on leave.
The nation’s legislators have expressed their anger and dissatisfaction regarding the fact that both the government and the board of directors at the Central Bank are reluctant to give details about the investigation.
The coordinator of the government team in parliament, Minister Soewarto Moestadja, gave a statement which reportedly raised even more questions. He stated four times that “the governor has agreed to the investigation which we deemed necessary.” Unofficial reports indicate that the expenditures of the Central Bank and a conflict of interest in the private sector are being investigated. Minister Moestadja refused to discuss the reasons for the investigation and the fact that Van Trikt has gone on leave. The board of directors issued a statement, indicating that it deemed the many rumors regrettable. But it failed to shed light on the matter. “The governor has neither been suspended nor fired. The Central Bank of Suriname still has a governor but his position is under pressure.” The board of directors promised that additional information would be released after the investigation has been concluded. “The board finds it awful that the reputation and the image of the governor are being dragged through the mud because of the rumors.”
