Copa Airlines to expand service to Suriname
Copa Airlines has plans aims at expanding its services to Suriname. Since its inaugural flight on July 6, 2019, Copa Airlines has had an occupancy rate of 90 percent on its direct flights from Panama to Suriname on its plane that has 124 seats. The airline company is considering expanding its flights from once a week to twice a week. Statistics indicate that the company flew more than 1,600 travelers to Suriname’s Johan Adolf Pengel (JAP) International Airport on a monthly basis. This number systematically rose to about 2,000 a month. In the summer period SeptemberOctober there was a noticeable spike in the number of travelers between Suriname and Panama. “Copa has no reasons to complain about its developments here”, said Timothy Mendonça, director at Airport Management. He pointed out that he is looking forward to the evaluation that Copa is doing regarding its flight routes that must be maintained. The preparations to get Copa Airlines to Suriname took about 6 years. Mendonça explained that Suriname met the expectations of Copa Airlines. “They started with a very high number”, said Mendonça about the number of passengers that Copa Airlines started flying from Panama to Suriname. “They change their schedule twice a year. I think that they will increase the frequency of flights to two a week in the middle of this year.”
