Justice to take firm action against trolls and bullies

Cyber police to patrol social media:

-

Justice officials will take firm action against people and groups who drag the reputation of others through the mud by making false accusations and ridiculing them on social media. People who manipulate pictures or footage in order to ridicule others can expect a phone call from the cyber police. “Hiding behind fake profiles will not do them much good because the cyber police have enough equipment to unmask the perpetrators,” said Minister Stuart Getrouw. The discussions regarding the regulation of social media comes at a time when photos of a man who was allegedly raped last week are being shared on social media. The photos have reportedly gone viral. “Such actions are punishable,” said Minister Getrouw. Legislators are reportedly discussing legislation aimed at taking firm action against sexual predators who try to lure minors on social media or via smartphones. Such actions which are referred to as grooming are currently not punishable by law. Blackmail is also rampant on social media. Youths are reportedly being blackmailed into performing sexual acts. Legislators also pointed out that adults also fall victim to such blackmail. “The people who use fake profiles can be unmasked by the police,” said Minister Getrouw who added that several cases where the perpetrators hid behind fake profiles have already been solved.
