“No session without Hoefdraad”

-

The economic problems in the country and the problems at the Central Bank of Suriname are currently the only priorities of parliament. Thursday’s session was cancelled because Finance Minister Gillmore Hoefdraad was not present at the start of it. The government had assured parliament that the minister would attend the session to share additional information with the legislators. The session will be held when the government can present the additional information. “That which the attorney general is busy with at the moment is now what we were busy with. We must let the attorney general do his job. But we asked for information,” said the chairwoman of parliament, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, shortly before postponing the session. She made it clear that other things can’t be discussed until fundamental questions have been answered.

The chairwoman then referred to the motion that was presented by the coalition and approved by parliament. She made it clear that the government must stick to the motion by giving information about the appointment of a new governor and the introduction of new rules aimed at preventing the same thing from happening. “Parliament had also asked a question about what the cash reserves were used for.

We were supposed to receive the information on paper. I still have not received anything,” said the chairwoman.

The coordinator of the government Soewarto Moestadja told parliament that Minister Hoefdraad could not attend the session because of the burning issues that Geerlings-Simons was referring to.
