Hundreds ignored stay-at-home order: More than fifteen hundred people caught

-

More than fifteen hundred people were caught nationwide for having violated the stayathome order. The violators who were spotted on the streets between 8 pm and 6 am could not give a valid reason for being out at night so they were brought to the police station and kept there until 6 am. Most of the violators were male. Statistics indicate that the western part of the country has the lowest rate of violators namely 87 while the eastern part of the country had 131 violators. There were no violators of the partial lockdown in Marienburg. The western region of Paramaribo has the highest number of violators namely 680. 371 of these violators were caught by the police units from the Kwatta

Police Department. 601 violators who were caught in the center of the capital were brought to various police stations. 79 of them were female. The day after officials announced that there were zero COVID19 cases in Suriname, 45 violators were spotted and caught in the center of Paramaribo. Humprhey Naarden, head of the Public Relations Office

of the Police Force Suriname, made it clear that the police had not eased the restrictions. “It seems as if people are given a free pass but that is not the case”, said Naarden who explained that people who are spotted on the streets at night and who have a valid reason are given a warning before being allowed to go to their destination.
