Partial lockdown suspended on May 24 and 25

The measures of the partial lockdown will be suspended on May 24 and 25. The partial lockdown will be back in effect at 11 pm on Tuesday, May 26. The airspace was opened for flights to and from the hinterland Friday, May 22. President Desi Bouterse announced the 2-day suspension of the partial lockdown on Thursday. He made it clear that the health measures such as social distancing would remain in effect. People are expected to keep a distance of 1.5 meters from each other. They are also expected to wash their hands with soap frequently. The head of state also urged each and every citizen to go to the polls on Election Day, May 25. “The eyes of the world are on Suriname especially given the positive results that have been achieved so far”, said President Bouterse who added that the borders would remain closed. People are not allowed to cross the river to come to Suriname or to reach neighborin­g countries. They are only allowed to use their boats on the Surinamese side of the river. “As of 11 pm on May 26 we will return to the partial lockown situation on behalf of our health.”
