Caricom observers impressed by elections in Suriname

-

The observation mission of the Caricom is impressed by the way the elections went in Suriname. The members of the delegation pointed out that the peaceful manner in which the supporters from various political parties treated each other on Election Day sets a good example for the other Caricom member states. They also received word of election fraud but did not find any reason to believe the rumors. Dora James, head of the Caricom mission, pointed out that the elections were transparent. Barbadian ambassador to the Caricom, David Comissiong,

who also observed the elections explained that there are more than enough safety valves in the Surinamese election system to either prevent or detect fraud. The fact that the ballots are read out loud at the polling stations enables everybody to see and hear the entire process. “The rooms are open and there are enough representatives from political parties to keep an eye on things. The ballots are read aloud before being shown to the representatives of the political parties and the Independent Election Bureau (OKB),” said Comissiong.
