Police ready to ‘tackle’ violators of lockdown

-

The Police Force Suriname (KPS) is reportedly ready to take firm action against people who violate the lockdown and has already warned everybody to stick to the measures aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 and to stay home as much as possible. The KPS also urged parents to keep their children home during the partial lockdown which went into effect on Tuesday, June 2, and which will remain in effect for the next two weeks. The police made it clear that parents are responsible for the safety of their children. When the first lockdown period started at the end of March youths who reside in the south of Paramaribo evidently violated the stay-at-home order and even crossed the line by provoking the police and barricading several roads. The KPS urges the entire nation to comply with the measures that were announced by the president on Monday. These measures include staying at home from 6 pm until 6 am, standing in groups of no more than 5 people and staying at a safe distance from each other. The police force made it clear that officers are not obligated to provide food to violators of the lockdown when they are caught and brought to the station where they must spend the night until 6 a.m. the next day.
