Source of most COVID-19 cases came from French Guiana and Brazil

-

The source of most of the current COVID-19 cases in Suriname came from neighboring French Guiana and Brazil. The sudden hike in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in a short period is related to the growing number of Brazilian garimpeiros and other people who crossed the Marowijne River to enter Suriname illegally. Many of the current active cases that are currently being investigated came from various villages located in the hinterland. Villagers from Klaaskreek and Nieuw Jacobkondre are in quarantine. Many people who are infected with COVID-19 came from Trans

America which is located at Albina and locations in the vicinity of the Tourtonnenlaan, Prinsesse- and Gongrijpstraat. These custers are being investigated and investigators suspect that many people were infected at these locations via these clusters. The report from the team of investigators indicate that the addresses of all of the current cases have been registered and the report indicates that many of these cases live at locations in Paramaribo North such as Tourtonne, Maretraite and in the vicinity of Ringweg and center. Another big group of positive cases came from various locations in Paramaribo South such as Latour, Flora, Pontbuiten, Menkendam, Zorg en Hoop and parts of Kwatta. “Together with the French authorities we must find a solution to the fact that people manage to cross the border illegally despite all of the border patrols in the East.” Surinamese officials indicate that border security must be beefed up and that people who managed to cross the river and their contacts must be screened and put in isolation/ quarantine. A multidisciplinary team of health experts and experts on the informal gold mining sector must be deployed.”
